Introduced by the Portuguese in the 17th century, Indian tobacco is today appreciated worldwide for its rich, full-bodied flavour and smoothness. It is now an increasingly well-known and well-respected commodity in world tobacco markets and has found its way into cigarettes manufactured in many different countries.
In the tobacco world, India has a very impressive and progressive profile. In 2009-10, India was among the top 3 tobacco producing countries in the world with the production of 725 million kgs. Of this, Flue Cured Virginia (FCV) tobacco -- the main exportable variety of tobacco that is produced in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka - accounted for 323 million kgs and led to India emerging as the leading exporter of FCV tobacco in the world.
Tobacco, in India, makes a significant contribution to the national economy by earning about US$ 928 million of foreign exchange (2009- I 0), besides accruing US$ 2.9 billion (2009-10) to the central exchequer by way of excise levies on manufactured tobacco. Tobacco is an important commercial crop that provides employment to nearly 36 million people, who are engaged in the various processes of tobacco cultivation, curing, grading, manufacturing and marketing.
