India is the seventh-largest producer of wool and accounts for nearly 2 to 3 percent of total world production. The global trade in textiles and clothing industry was valued at US$ 523 billion in 2009, representing a growth rate of 5.4 per cent for the period 2005 to 2009.India has the third largest sheep population in the world with 61.5 million sheep. The annual wool production is in the range of 45-48 million kg.
The wool textile industry in India is poised to grow at a healthy rate. A higher rate of technology penetration into this industry, coupled with government incentives and other capacity-building initiatives have resulted in increased exports, besides stimulating domestic consumption.
Highlights
- The industry is rural-based and export-oriented in which the organised sector, the decentralised sector and the rural sector complement each other. The industry is concentrated in the states of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. Around 40 per cent of the woollen units are located in Punjab, 27 per cent in Haryana, 10 per cent in Rajasthan, while the rest of the states account for the remaining 23 per cent of the units. The larger units are located in Maharashtra, Punjab, Gujarat and West Bengal.
- The production of indigenous raw wool in 2009-10 was estimated to be at 43.2 million kg. About 80 per cent of good quality indigenous wool goes into manufacturing of carpets which alone is a major contributor to export earnings. Indian wool is almost exclusively of broader micron and used extensively in the manufacturing of carpets and rugs.
The total number of units, including those in the decentralised hosiery and shawl sector, was 958 in 2010-11 compared to 718 units in 2003-04.The wool textile industry provides employment to 2.7 million workers, 1.2 million in the organised sector, 1.2 million in sheep rearing and farming, and 0.3 million weavers in the carpet sector.
